Are the better traders closer to 100% winning trades, or is that just the way it seems? In contrast, the closer the traders are to 0%; it would seem that they are worse. There is more to trading than winning the most possible trades, even though that seems peculiar. This article will hopefully help fill you in on why I would argue that a 95% win rate is infinitely worse than a 65% win rate.

A trader with a 0% – 40% rate, we will classify as low. Let’s take a look at these low traders. The closer they are to 0% in this range undoubtedly the probability is that they are worse than if they were at least higher in the same range. The lower range puts most traders in the category of a losing trader. Occasionally however, you will come across a trader whose modus operandi is to snag large moves with tight stops. This is a trader that has a % that is a very low win rate but can still be considered a successful trader.

The next range is from ~40% to ~70%. This is the range most winning traders will be in. The reason these traders win is not because they pick a ton of winning trades and rarely have a loser. They may in fact have more losing trades than winning trades. The reason they are able to win is that they properly manage their trades once they are open. They use reasonable stops that will often be executed. This obviously results in a losing trade, but a small loser. These small losers are only a fraction of the size of their winning trades. These are most often the traders that have the ability to cut their losses but let their winners run. This seems like a simple concept, but very few traders have the discipline to actually do it.

Our final grouping is in the very high range of a percentage of 70 and above. Most people want to fall on the bandwagon of a trader who is close to 100%. Most people are making a mistake; they should actually align themselves with the trader of a much more modest % win rate. Why is that, you may ask? The reason for the high win percentage of these traders is that they are most of the time taking profits off the table as they appear. A working plan if they also cut their losses in the same way. Any trader, though with a 95 % plus win rate is not following this plan. They do not accept small losses and go forward with their trading day. Oh no, they allow a loser to run rampant for all eternity and may even add to that position in some circumstances. You can see that this in time will wipe out many months of winning trades in one blow and the results are disastrous. For every 500 pip winners obtained one at a time, one 500 pip loser negates them all. And yet, this trader falls into our “winning” range of over 99% winning trades and is in reality a big loser.

Do not think for one minute that the reason for this article is to convince you that no trader outside the specified ranges is automatically a losing trader. I’m quite sure that there are traders that are successful with a win percent falling outside of the above ranges. The point of this article is to lead you to thoroughly investigate the trader with the 95% win rate as he could implode upon himself (and you) at any minute.

“Is there a particularly good way to set your trading and investment goals?” For trading and indeed for all areas of your life, there are two crucial elements in goal setting and attainment. First the perceived difficulty of the goal and secondly how specifically you state the goal. These two elements will play a large part in determining whether you will achieve the goal.

If you set yourself a trading/investing goal which is difficult and specific you are more likely to heighten your performance to attain your goal.

So with a trading/investing goal example to earn $50,000 for the year, a more difficult and specific goal may be $51,600. If your brain perceives $51,600 yearly earning as a more specific goal than $50,000 yearly earning then you are more likely to raise your performance to achieve your goal of $51,600.

Setting difficult and specific goals provide a better outcome than setting goals you know are easily attainable. So, if you believe that you can comfortably achieve $51,600 through your trading, then raise the level to something more challenging like $72,400.

But your goal has to be realistic to be achievable. You need to believe your goal is attainable through your past experience, knowledge, training and/or skills that you can make it happen. So to perform against your goal make it realistic.

So that is the setting of your trading goal. What about along the way…on the journey to achieving the goal? You will be most committed to achieving a goal when you believe that achieving the goal is important. Also when you can see that progress is being made towards achieving the goal, you get the best results.

A way of measuring your trading progress, can be done as simply as keeping an ongoing running tally of your trading outcomes for the year. For example, if your goal is to earn $72,400 from trading for the year and by half way through the year your trading tally is $38,100 you can measure how well you are placed to achieving your goal – you have more than half of your goal achieved.

Often when we start off in trading/investing we do not set goals. Often we’re just happy to see ourselves make some money. This unfortunately is not specific or difficult – it is not going to challenge or focus your performance.

Start by setting a difficult, specific, and realistic trading/investing goal and start measuring your progress. But make sure you understand why you want to achieve your goal; you need to know why it is important for you to achieve your goal.

Your least acceptable result is often the true goal that people achieve from any activity – what is your trading/investing least acceptable result. One of the less traditional methods of heating a swimming pool is through the use of solar energy. Energy directly from the sun is collected in solar panels and stored. On hot and sunny days the heat from the sun alone heats your pool to a certain degree. Think of the added benefit gained from the storage of heat gathered in the solar panels to further add warmth to your pools’ waters. An electric water pump is required as a part of this type system. The water pump is what carries the water through the panel collectors allowing the heat to be absorbed into the water as it is then delivered back into the swimming pool. To utilize this type of system you need to have areas around the pool area condusive to sunlight. It stands to reason that if sunlight was blocked and the area was shaded this would not be the appropriate system to install. The size of the solar powered collectors must be the same size of the surface area of the pool for the energy transfer to be adequate. Depending on the size of your solar equipment determines the relative cost. The initial cost of this system may be expensive up front; but, when you factor in the savings down the road it is a worth while investment.

An obvious benefit to heating your pool with solar energy is you are supplementing the suns’ ability to do just that by merely collecting energy from the sun itself. While solar heating is not a traditional way to heat a swimming pool the function of a solar pool heater is fairly basic. You will need the following equipment: solar collectors, a water pump and the sun of course. The area you have to work with is of great importance since the size of the solar collectors needs to be of the same square footage or at least 50% of the surface depending on the amount of sun focus your landscape offers. You will want to place the collectors in the sunniest areas where the sun reaches the majority of the day. If your space is limited and lacks the area for placement of the solar panels then you should know before going any further that heating your swimming pool with solar heat may not be the best option. The water pump has a strategic purpose in its’ job to aid the heating of your pool. The water pump directs the pool water through the solar panels. During this process the water is warmed from the heat collected in the panels and then returned to the pool warming the existing pool water. As this process continues the suns’ energy retained in the solar collectors is continuously heating the pools’ water. Another point to remember is by running your solar system steadily on hot and sunny days will enable you to heat your pool more efficiently. The opposite is true on cooler and cloudy days. This is because the temperatures trapped by the solar collectors would be cooler and hence perform the opposite task of warming, end result would be cooling the water.

There are 2 basic solar collector designs used for swimming pool heaters,the flat plate design and the evacuated tube design. Since pool water is somewhat corrosive due to the chlorine, the evacuated tube collectors utilize a heat exchanger.

The perfect complement to heating with solar panels is adding a pool cover to the equation. The cover will aid in trapping the heat in the pool; slowing down the loss of warmth. It is a known fact that heat rises. This explains why in a two-story home the second level will naturally be warmer than the downstairs level any time of the year. There are a couple of other benefits to incorporating a pool cover, 1) Your system would operate more efficiently, reducing your electric/gas expenses. 2) Would lessen the need to clean your swimming pool as often as in the past. There are pool covers with built in pockets that absorb and maintain heat provided from the sun. There are referred to as solar blankets. If your pool area receives a minimum of 5 hours of sunlight daily the solar blanket would increase your pools’ temperature by at least 1 degree per day up to 8 degrees (losing any further heat gain beyond this point). You may find these solar pool blankets to be more expensive; however, worth the additional cost.

When a pool cover is in place it prevents the entry of trash/debris from entering your swimming pool and limits the amount of algae growth. Coincident with this means the reduction in chemicals to be used in elimination of these particles. Therefore, this would help to cut expenses as well as physical labor. Additionally, with the use of a pool cover you would be creating a medium to catch falling leaves, twigs and larger debris before entering the swimming pool.

Understand that using solar panels as the main source for heating your pool will be costly up front; however, with the savings down the road you will recoup that initial investment. These solar systems can last up to 20 years, a relatively long life span. Remember to consider the additional savings you will incur by the use of a solar blanket pool cover in conjunction with the solar collective panels. An added benefit to this type of heating system is it is environmentally friendly which makes this an excellent choice in pool heating systems.
